Respite Care House Project

We are pleased to announce a joint initiative between Cara, Westfield and Housing SA that will transform an existing six bedroom house to become a disability friendly respite house.

Housing SA has provided a double unit, while Westfield and its staff, suppliers and contractors are involved in renovating the property. Cara will manage the respite house on completion of the project.

Westfield has had a long association with Cara in South Australia; this project is part of the national Westfield Community Program that has been established to provide support for children with disabilities and their families.

The program was launched in February 2008, following more than 12 months research and analysis to determine an area of need in the community where they could make a contribution. Research indicated that kids and families with disabilities have great community need.

This fact hit home with Westfield as one of its staff members has kids with disabilities. Westfield staff and its suppliers and contractors also wanted to be involved in a project where they could see the physical results of their efforts.

Renovations are about to get underway and the house is expected to be completed in October. This webpage is designed to keep you up to date with the progress of the project so check back regularly to see what is happening.

Respite House 'Turn the Dirt Event'

To get the Respite House project underway, a 'Turning the Dirt' function was held on Wednesday 20 May.

Over 100 Westfield staff, contractors, suppliers; representatives from Housing SA, State Government, Local Council, Cara and Kidman Park Rotary Club attended to kick start the project.

Minister for Housing and Disabilities, The Hon Jennifer Rankin MP, while not being able to attend the official function, did visit the respite house on the day. Minister Rankin recognised the significance of this first private, public partnership between Housing SA, Westfield and Cara for a great community cause.

It was a wonderful way to meet all involved, with Westfield Regional Manager SA, Malcolm Creswell and Cara President Nita Curtis, overseeing official proceeding with the unveiling of a new sign to identify the house.
