An opportunity to volunteer

Cara is committed to enhancing the range of opportunities available to people with a disability to assist with community inclusion. One such opportunity is through the involvement of volunteers.

Volunteers are a valuable extension of the network of relationships available to people with a disability beyond the supports provided by Cara staff.

Where Can I Volunteer?
In any of our community based accommodation and respite services in metropolitan and rural areas or at Head Office.

Accommodation services include groups of 4 people living together or people living alone with support in the community.

Respite Services include houses in the community where up to 5 people stay for short periods or assistance to individuals living in their family home or the community.

Volunteers also provide valuable support at holiday venues or camps or by becoming host families and welcoming a child with a disability into their home.

What can I do as a Volunteer?

  • Provide assistance to people with a disability in the community with recreational or other activities
  • Provide assistance in the home with recreation, leisure or independent living skills eg reading, playing games, cooking, shopping etc
  • Share your skills and interests
  • Be a companion or friend
  • Provide home maintenance, gardening and handyman support
  • Teach a person with a disability a new skill eg computers, craft etc
  • Support a person with a disability on holiday or camp
  • Teach staff new skills eg craft, computers, massage etc.
  • Assist fundraising activities
  • Administration support
  • Become a Host Family through the Families for Families Program

What do I need to be a Volunteer at Cara?

  • A positive attitude towards people with a disability
  • An interest in people
  • Dependability and a willingness to learn
  • Some spare time to give
  • All volunteers must undergo a Police Clearance – please note that there is no charge for this.

Benefits of Volunteering

As a volunteer you can:

  • Work within a team
  • Meet new people
  • Make new friends
  • Develop skills and interests
  • Gain satisfaction and confidence

Support for Volunteers
Volunteers receive full on the job support and training. People wishing to pursue employment receive training whilst gaining valuable experience. We welcome new thoughts and ideas and are happy to work with potential volunteers to develop mutually beneficial programs.

Group Volunteering
Cara appreciates the volunteer support offered by corporate and community groups. There are projects suitable for those groups with limited time to give or for those that can make a longer term commitment.

If you'd like more information or would like to become involved as a volunteer at Cara, please contact the Coordinator, Community Partnerships on 8347 4588 or email.
